The American Council on Teaching Foreign Languages (ACTFL) has awarded the 2007 Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education to Dr. Bill VanPatten, Professor of Applied Linguistics and Second Language Studies in the Department of Classical and Modern Languages and Literatures. ACTFL is an individual membership organization of more than 9,000 foreign language educators and administrators from elementary through graduate education, as well as government and industry. It is the only national organization dedicated to the improvement and expansion of the teaching and learning of all languages at all levels of instruction. The award was presented at the 2007 ACTFL Annual Convention Awards Ceremony on November 16th, 2007.
Dr. Bill VanPattens professional accomplishments and leadership exemplify the spirit and essence of the ACTFL NYSAFLT Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education. His impact on language and teacher education ranges from working with graduate students, K-12 educators in professional development programs, to his academically rigorous and prolific publications that are read and cited widely by members of the language teaching profession worldwide. The dossier that accompanied his nomination provided stellar professional illustrations for each of the five criteria areas established for the award Teaching, Research, Service, Educating Current and Future Professionals and Recognition.
Dr. VanPatten has received numerous awards and recognition for his scholarship as well as his teaching and award winning publications, including his well known video language-learning series, Destinos, Sabas que?, and Sol y Viento. Letters of support of his nomination, attest to his high level of collegiality and depict him as an unfailingly generous supportive colleague and mentor. Additionally, others spoke of his work with students, stating that their own successes in the profession are living testimonials to Bills quest toward excellence in teacher preparation, and that many of his students are already significant scholars in their own right.
One of Bill's former students shared that the Anthony Papalia Award honors a teacher, educator, and author who significantly influenced the lives of countless students and practicing teachers. I cannot thing of anyone who fits this description better that Bill VanPatten. This Committee couldnt either.
Dr. Bill VanPatten was nominated for this award by the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages.

I am humbled by this award and accept it on behalf of all the students and teachers with whom I have had the great privilege to work over the years. To be recognized for ones work in the education and mentoring of others is, I believe, the greatest of honors. I thank ACTFL and NYSAFLT for this recognition, and I especially thank the Northeast Conference on the Teaching of Foreign Languages for its nomination. In May of 2008 I will be celebrating twenty-five years in the profession and I can think of no better way look forward to the spring semester. Mi ms profundo agradecimiento. Mes sentiments les plus distingus.
